CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

It has been observed that a number of students in institutions of learning are truant. They become truant in order to engage in activities which are neither under the control of the home nor of the school. To defend himself or herself. The truant decoys his parents and teachers and frequent truancy may lead to vagrancy. Truancy is more a proof of the inadequacy our present educational system than an evidence of any propensity to crime.

It is a system, which attaches little importance to individuality. The ways in which children exhibit their truancy are many. An example can be cited in Irele in Ondo state where students usually go to the bush to search for snails, killing rabbits and collecting fruits, going to hidden places without any purpose. Some finds their way to the rivers to swim while others engage in petty jobs to get money for buying snacks, minerals, ice cream etc some even engage in secrete love that always makes them to leave the school premises. There are some students who cannot bear or remain in the corrective atmosphere at home or in the school such students will have to explore other places to relax and satisfy their curiosity. Obviously, such students will truant in the school. A truant can also be described as the person that stays away from school without good reasons. He or she is irregular at school attendance for he finds other places more attractive than that school and all. It stands for truancy is one of the offences which students in institutions of learning commit. From research work carried out it was discovered that truancy is of varying degree in institutions of learning and it is comparatively greater in the secondary schools than the high institutions of learning.

Researches have shown that the rate at which staff and students in our society are committing truancy is alarming. This probably gives a strong indication as to the effectiveness of externally motivated factors; to makes individual conform to the norms of society. In this research, I would like to look at the child’s personality, the parents, the child development stages and the possible causes, effects and solutions of truancy, which is not due to single isolated factors, but a combination of factors. These causal factors are by no means the only factors that have been fingered for the high rate of truancy amongst students.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Truancy poses a se4ious threat to learning in most schools, the school on the other hand, do not seem to be able to cope with the problem,. Because no sufficient attempts has been made to reach its root. One thing that is clear in this issue. There is a growing tendency for schools children to be involved in social vices, such as stealing, smoking etc. this is because most home no longer play their traditional function to rear and bring up the child in an upright manner. This is because many parents are sop preoccupied with duties (working, travelling) outside the homes that they have little or no time to keep watch over the action and behaviour of their children.

In most of their schools, there is no conducive atmosphere for learning. This is due to the fact that schools are highly populated, poorly equipped and under staffed. Since students cannot cope with their unfavourable conditions, which these schools are placed, this eventually leads to truancy and other social vices found in our society today. Broken home can also be attributed to the cause of truancy because children from a single parent need to be more exposed to the danger of the society, for example a single parent child will leave the mothers house and say he or she is going to the father house thereby using the opportunity to go and stay in her boyfriends house for the boys, they so and join bad peer group without the mother and father knowing, because they would think she is in the father house and vise visa.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

This research is carried out to find possible solution to the causes of truancy as a social problem among secondary school students. Our policy makers, administrators, parent’s teachers, pupils and other person who play active role in or educational system must face this problem. It must survive the test of time, remedy for most of our societal problem. This would certainly contribute to national welfare, productivity and reduce the unpleasant situation experienced by students who are seen as failure.

SIGNIFICANT OF THE STUDY

The purpose of this study is to identify the causes of truancy among secondary school students apart from this, the result of this study will be useful to education planners, administrators of school and parents and as well as the general public. It will contribute to the few existing literature on truancy.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The research questions of the study includes;

Does inadequate equipment facilitate truancy among students of various groups?

Does poor classroom management leads to truancy in school?

Does lack of parents care causes truancy?

SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The study would be limited to Irele West Local Government Area of Ondo State and would focus on the effect of truancy on the academic performance of students in Irele West Local Government Area of Ondo State.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

A truant is a child who stays away from school without good reasons in order to avoid classroom work that seen unpleasant to time. According to Herbert (1994) defined truancy “as a child who absent himself from school without a legitimate cause and without the permission of this parents or the school authorities.

Truancy: frequent absence from school without permission is known as truancy. This affects learning as lesson are missed by students who stayed away from school as a result of truancy.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

It will be of a great advantage to us by helping us to understand dearly what research is all about. If we take our time to carefully examine those factors that are responsible for broken homes which now have adverse effect on the academic performance of children in primary schools.

The basic reason for instability in the family is the sense of disappointment on the part of the couple or one of them.

Many at times young people go into marriage without the knowledge of what he or she is getting into. Some go into marriage with high hope for happiness and performance in their marital life. Many become disappointed when these high hopes do not materialize because of certain factors which are internal such as emotional immaturity, lack of flexibility in accommodating each others aspirations, behaviours and short comings, inability to both give and take, breakdown in communication, etc.  There are also some external factors which when added to the above mentioned ones spur the couple into separation. Such external factors are parental interference in the marital affairs of their children in one way or another, stress and difference in values.

Every family worldwide ha some basic functions or responsibilities towards their children. Every parent is expected to be a model for the children to learn from. Parents can only become model if they are able to fulfill the basic obligation of preparing the children for adult life. Parents are expected to act as models by showing competences in what they do and generally conducting themselves with respect.

Children for instance learn to speak any language by listening to and imitating their parents and other members of the family. They also acquire their moral values on the child’s development us the parents attitude towards him or her. Such factors as degree of stability of the family, the social position of parents in the society and this the income of the family usually influence this.

From experience, we have learned that under-feeding many reduce performance at school. There are many problems of development, which arises from poverty. For example if one or two children born at the same time is neglected and ill fed and the other cared for and well fed, the latter is likely to look stronger and healthier than the former. It is a fact that even if in later years the ill fed child gets good nutrition and well cared for, the child’s gets good continues to reflect his early neglect.

The fact that the child needs good physical care inform of good feeding makes parents a vital factor in the development of the child. It will be observed that what is said about the parents are regarding the child’s physical development is also true of his reasons why there are differences in the mental development or ability in the children in the schools. The environment, where they come from is never the same. Some environments are more stimulating than others. For example, just as with physical care, if one of two children born with the same mental ability has a good home background, former is most likely to have an additional advantage of being more able to benefit from school than the latter.

Also if a child has no decent dresses or shoes to wear to school, other children are likely to mock his bad dirty or turn clothes or shoes. Such a child may not be a happy child at school and may not be expected to produce his best performance in the school. The attitude of parents towards the day to day activities of their ward in and outside the home plays an importance role in their all round development.

1.2       STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The reasoning today in Nigeria is that the standard of education has fallen, thus leading to lots of arguments amongst scholars, traders, civil servant etc as the immediate and remote causes of the failure and the factors hindering high standard of education while we may blame both government teachers and children, the home which the pupils comes from leaves much to be desired.

It is important to note that we cannot exonerate the home which the child comes from which we are taking about pupils performance in schools. This skill living together as husband and wife or there have been separation in the home {broken home}, socio-economic status of the parents level of education of parents, family size and health facility.

To deal with the effects of broken homes on the academic performance of pupils, certain questions were asked these include: –

a.           To what extent does the socio-economic status of parents influence the academic performance of pupils?

b.           How the family structures in terms of broken homes affect the academic achievement of pupils.

c.           Is there any relationship between family structure and academic performance?

d.           How does the attitude of parents and sibling affect the academic performance of pupils?

e.           Is there any relationship between living conditions at home and the academic performance of pupils?

1.3       PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

Broken home is one of the factors that can affect the academic achievement of a child at schools. The home is the bedrock of the child’s socialization processes. A child starts to learn about life as soon a he comes into this world. As a social animal the child does not learn in a vacuum but rather he actively learn in a society of human beings who influence his progress. Such society embodies the home, which the family belongs and the school. It has been argued that broken homes have an adverse effect on the educational outcome of the child by affecting his attitude in school.

It is observed that the pupil’s poor performance in their school work could be traced to their parents educational status, the parents socio-economic status and family structure of pupils.

It is therefore the purpose of this study to investigate the effects of broken homes on the academic achievement of the pupils.

1.4       SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The family all over the world is known to be a core unit of the larger society. Having known the effects of broken homes on the school learning of programme in schools. The teacher will be more informed of the consequences of broken homes on the school performance of the child. Also, from the findings of the study the teacher will be in a better position to appreciate the behaviour children from broken homes and to see them as unique individuals and teach them accordingly.

At the end of the survey and analysis of the data collected, necessary recommendations would be made to appropriate government as to the area of assistance to parents and children from such homes so that in future they will be able to benefit from school learning.

1.5       RESEARCH QUESTIONS

Records have shown that the standard of performance in our primary school is on the decline. The researcher is therefore eager to find out what exactly are the causes of the poor performance of children in their school learning.

The researcher wants to find out if there is any relationship between homes and falling standard of performance of primary school children with particular reference to children in Evboesi in Orhionmwon  Local Government Area of Edo State.

The researcher hopes to find out answers to the following questions.

1.           Could psychological and emotional disturbance lead to academic and social backwardness on a child?

2.           Could insecurity and unruly attitude of the surviving parents or step to children of broken homes lead to their attitude towards learning at school?

3.           Are these children being encourage academically by their sponsors?

4.           What are the effects of broken homes on the academic performance of children in primary school?

1.6       SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The researcher has been able to solve this research problem by closely examining the causes of broken homes and its effects on the academic performance of children in some selected primary schools.

This study is limited to Evboesi Grammar School in Orhionmwon  local government area of Edo state. In the realization of similar conditions facing most students in Evboesi in Orhionmwon  local government area, the survey shall be focused on pupils in primary four and five.

1.7       DEFINITION OF TERMS

THE EFFECT OF ENVIRONMENT ON THE PERFORMANCE OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1     Background to the Study

The school environment, which include the classrooms, libraries, technical workshops, laboratories, teachers’ quality, school management, teaching methods, peers, etc are variables that affect students’ academic achievement (Ajayi, 2001 and Oluchukwu, 2000).  Hence, the school environment remains an important area that should be studied and well managed to enhance students’ academic performance.

The issue of poor academic performance of students in Nigeria has been of much concern to the government, parents, teachers and even student themselves. The quality of education not only depends on the teachers as reflected in the performance of their duties, but also in the effective coordination of the school environment (Ajao 2001)

School environment which include instructional spaces planning, administrative places planning, circulation spaces planning, spaces for conveniences planning, accessories planning, the teachers as well as the students themselves are essential in teaching-learning process. The extent to which student learning  could be enhanced depends on their location within the school compound, the structure of their classroom, availability of instructional facilities and accessories. It is believed that a well planned school will gear up expected outcomes of education that will facilitate good social, political and economic emancipation, effective teaching and learning process and academic performance of the students.

Relating this study to international occurrences are the assertions of Williams, Persaud, and Turner (2008), quoting Marsden (2005), which reported that safe and orderly classroom environment (aspect of instructional space), School facilities (accessories) were significantly related to students’ academic performance in schools. The three researchers, also quoted Glassman (1994), asserting that a comfortable and caring environment among other treatments helped to contribute to students` academic performance.

The physical characteristics of the school have a variety of effects on teachers, students, and the learning process. Poor lighting, noise, high levels of carbon dioxide in classrooms, and inconsistent temperatures make teaching and learning difficult. Poor maintenance and ineffective ventilation systems lead to poor health among students as well as teachers, which leads to poor performance and higher absentee rates (Frazier, 2002 Lyons, 2001; and Ostendorf, 2001). These factors can adversely affect student behavior and lead to higher levels of frustration among teachers, and poor learning attitude among student.

Beyond the direct effects that poor facilities have on students’ ability to learn, the combination of poor facilities, which create an uncomfortable and uninviting workplace for teachers, combined with frustrating behavior by students including poor concentration and hyperactivity, lethargy, or apathy, creates a stressful set of working conditions for teachers. Because stress and job dissatisfaction are common pre-cursors to lowered teacher enthusiasm, it is possible that the aforementioned characteristics of school facilities have an effect upon the academic performance of students.

Previous studies have investigated the relationship of poor school environment including problems with student-teacher ratio, school location, school population, classroom ventilation, poor lighting in classrooms, and inconsistent temperatures in the classroom with student health problems, student behavior, and student achievement (Crandell & Smaldino, 2000; Davis, 2001; Johnson, 2001; Lyons, 2001;Moore, 2002; Stricherz, 2000; Tanner, 2000). To complement these studies, the present research will examine the aforementioned areas of school environment as it affect students performance in Nigerian schools.

Statement of the Problem

Emphasizing the importance of school environment to students academic performance, Oluchukwu, (2000) asserted school environment is an essential aspect of educational planning, he went further to explain that “unless schools are well suited, buildings adequately constructed and equipment adequately utilized and maintained, much teaching and learning may not take place.

The high levels of students’ academic performance may not be guaranteed where instructional space such as classrooms, libraries, technical workshops and laboratories are structurally defective. However, little is known on the impact of school environment on students’ academic performance in an urban city like Lagos State.

1.3     Objectives of the Study

The purposes of this study are:

i.            To examine the relationship between school environment and the student academic performance

ii.            To examine the impact of school facilities on the academic performance of  students  in the secondary school

iii.            To explore factors such as class size that have been perceived to promote or inhibit students learning in the academic process of students in secondary school

iv.            To investigate the extent to which school location affects the academic achievement of secondary school students.

1.4     Research Questions

i.            Is there any relationship between school environment and the student academic performance?

ii.            To what extent do school facilities affect student performance in secondary school?

iii.            What effect does class size has on the academic performance of students in secondary school?

iv.            To what extent does school location has on the achievement of secondary school students?

1.5     Research Hypothesis

Ho1      There is no significant difference between school environment and the student academic performance

Ho2      There is no significant difference between school facilities and academic performance  of students

Ho3      There is no significant difference between class size and academic performance  of students

Ho4      There is no significant difference between school location and academic performance  of students

1.6     Significance of the Study

It is hoped that this study will provide information for parents, educators and school administrators to reflect upon various factors that help students in achieving their academic goals. In so doing, they can investigate the possibility of introducing those factors to their school, which may consequently lead to enhancing students’ educational outcomes in school. In addition, the fact that this study is conducted in public schools, it shares quite a lot of similarities with  many other counterparts. In this connection, this study provides a valuable reference for other schools to reflect upon the school environment as it affect the academic performance of student in secondary school.

1.7     Scope of the Study

This research work focuses on influence of school environment on academic performance of secondary school students in some selected schools in  Agege Local Government Area Of Lagos State. This research work  covers all public secondary schools students in Agege Local Government Area Of Lagos State. However, four public secondary schools will be used as case study.

1.8  Limitation of the Study

Apart  from  time-frame  and  shortage  of  finance,  the  major  limitation to  this  research  is  the  inability  of  the  researcher  to  cover  the  whole public secondary school in Agege Local Government Area Of Lagos State as the title suggest.

1.9     Research Methodology

A descriptive research design will be use in carrying out this study. The sample for this study constitutes one hundred (100) respondents. For this research work, random sampling technique will be used. This study will be restricted to the categories of students the researcher considered essentially relevant to issues being investigated. Simple percentage statistical analysis will be used for the study.

1.10   Definition of Terms

School: A school is an institution designed for the teaching of students (or “pupils”) under the direction of teachers

School Environment: A school’s physical environment includes the school building and the surrounding.

Academic Achievement – Knowledge attained or skills developed in school subjects by  test scores.

Secondary school (also”high school”)is a term used to describe an educational institution where the final stage of schooling, known as secondary education and usually compulsory up to a specified age, takes place. It follows elementary or primary education, and may be followed by university (tertiary) education.

THE USE OF INTERNET ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS.A CASE STUDY OF IMO STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1    Background to the study

The Internet is a relatively new channel for scholarly resources, and contains vast quantities of information that vary a great deal regarding its contents, aim, target group, reliability etc. Hence, it is important that the end-user is aware of the diverse information available on the Internet, and educated in the criteria by which the information content should be assessed (Chapman, 2002). The fabulous growth in telecommunication has brought online services, specialized electronic networks, WebPages, E-mail, software and global information resources to our homes as well as to education.

The Internet provides an environment in which millions of people participate and engage in the creation and exchange of

information (Rose & Fernlund, 1997).

Students have only recently received the opportunity to use the Internet to seek and obtain scholarly material and, consequently, knowledge on how effectively they make use of this channel is limited. Students’ information seeking culminates as they work on their theses. Many studies have been conducted regarding the type of information the endusers seek and obtain on the Internet and in which circumstances they prefer electronic sources to paper sources (Tenopir et al. 2003)

According to their survey, approximately 50% of all the scholarly publications were obtained from the Internet, who studied geography student’s use of sources on the Internet by analyzing citations from a test, found that 51% of the citations referred to sources on paper, 47% of the sources were from the Internet and the rest was course material. (Fescemeyer, 2000)

Iboronke (2002) has attributed the poor performance to the rise in students enrolment without corresponding increase in the material and human resources. In this study the effect of these materials and human resources on students performance will be investigated.

The use of the available learning resources will improve the academic performance of students. In order words, one of the opportunities to stimulate this elaboration process is by offering students more and more diverse learning resources. Ogunleye’s (2003) review that under laboratory conditions increasing the richness and diversity of the learning materials has often been shown to support students in learning, remembering and applying information.

Internet use has become very popular in many areas as well as in education in recent years. Accordingly, Internet access in schools has increased greatly over the last 20 years (Berson, 2000).

Many experts see the computer, combined with multimedia capabilities, as the new tool that can transform education (Van Horn, 1991) points out that the computer can solve many of the problems facing teachers. In today’s environment the teacher is expected to have a large knowledge base. The teacher also has the problem of deciding to teach at the low end or the high end of the grade level. Many compromise and teach in the middle. Computers can solve these two problems by enabling teachers to customize instruction for each student (McKeown, 1991).

1.2    Statement of problem

The role of Internet in teaching/learning can not be overemphasized. The issue of the poor academic performance of students is traced to certain factors which, can hinder student understanding.

Academic achievement is an important parameter in measuring success in students. Observations and reports have shown that success or high academic achievement has become a Herculean task to accomplish by students in recent times. The decline in the academic performance of students in Nigerian universities had been highlighted by Soyinka (1999), when he observed that university system in Nigeria needed restructuring. He went further to say that academic standard had fallen drastically and the quality of graduates being produced by the nations universities is questionable and subject to re-examination. Poor academic achievement of students has been of great concern to educationists, government and the public in general.

Students’ poor performance in Tertiary institution has continued to pose a serious concern to government agencies, parents and the students themselves (Essien 2004). Most previous studies had tended to attribute this problem to factors that are extraneous to the learner, such as poor physical facilities, school environment etc. Various strategies adopted by different governments and agencies tend not to address the problem substantially. There is therefore further need to research into other possible factors or variables underlying students’ performance, since behaviour is a product of environmental and psychosocial variables.

1.3    The purpose of study

The major purpose of this study is to determine whether internet usage has any remarkable influence on students academic performance. Specifically, the study seeks to determine whether:

Internet usage can enhance academic performance students.

The use of search engines can improve the academic performance of students.

E-mail services improve academic performance of students.

1.5    Research questions

These research seeks to answers the following questions in the course of this investigation.

How does internet usage influence the academic performance of students?

To what extent does the use of search engine enhance the academic performance of students?

Does E-mail services contribute to students academic performance?

1.6    Research hypothesis

The following hypotheses were formulated to guide the investigation of this study.

There is no significant relationship between the use of internet and students academic performance.

There is no significant relationship between the use of search engine and students academic performance.

There is no significant relationship between e-mail services and students academic performance.

1.7    Significant of study

the outcome of this study aims at determining whether or not the use of internet has any significant influence on the academic performance of students.

More over education is the bedrock of any society. Nigeria as a developing nation needs a standard tertiary institutions that has available learning resources, that teachers can improvise learning resources easily and more often also where teachers and students utilize learning resources on a regular basis. It could be a guide line for incoming students and be educative to them when writing and studying similar problems in school.

This study has made me to explore into the topic influence of internet usage on the academic performance of students. It is also a requirement I must be produce for the award of a degree in curriculum and teaching, faculty of education.

1.8    Delimitation of the study

This research is designed particularly to know or test the influence of internet usage on the academic performance of students in order to guide against negative trend about the falling standard of education in our society and to improve upon the positive side.

1.9    Limitation of the study

A lot of problems were encountered during the period of this research like; finance, transportation from one tertiary institution to another, some of the issues were not discussed in detail.

Another problem was distance. Due to the long distance from one village to another within the local government area, it was not possible for the researcher to move round all the villages for  sufficient data.

Also, during the administration of the questionnaires, some students were not willing to respond to the items. Some refused to answer the questions out of non challanteness. It was also observed that in some cases, students were not independent of themselves in answering the questionnaire items.

1.11  Definition of terms

The following terms are define in the context there are being use in the study.

Internet: The Internet is a global network connecting millions of computers.

Performance: An action in which excellence or superiority depend primarily on abstract mental ability. Any action requiring the manipulation of abstracts, concepts or mental manipulation of any sort.

E-mail: Email is electronic mail, a protocol for receiving and sending, and storing electronic messages.

Search engine: a program that searches for and identifies items in a database that correspond to keywords or characters specified by the user, used especially for finding particular sites on the Internet.

Social network: a network of social interactions and personal relationships.

Website: a location connected to the Internet that maintains one or more web pages.

EFFECT OF ASUU STRIKES ON THE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

The education sub-sector especially tertiary institutions in Nigeria have witnessed in recent time incessant closures due to industrial actions. The effect of these repeated closures of schools and academic programs on students’ learning effectiveness can better be imagined than described. Tertiary education in Nigeria has thus suffered tremendous setbacks as a result of industrial actions by both the academic (ASUU) and the non academic staffs. This has always subjected the students to pitiable conditions, disrupting academic programs, giving students’ undeserved extension in their study years, poor students’ concentration on academic programs and poor lecturer-student relationships amongst others. Consequently, students’ academic performance has comparatively become so low while various forms of examination malpractice are on the increase.

University worldwide is regarded as the citadel of learning, the fountain of intellectual development and a ground for the production of leaders of tomorrow. According to Ike (1999) a university fulfills, one major function, it is a  knowledge and value provider, in other words, a university progresses when it is able to provide knowledge and value and when it is not properly managed by the administrators and staff, it then fails in its function of providing knowledge and value. This according to Nwankwo (2000) explains why merit has been the watchword in the university system – an institution in which a student must first be certified worthy in character and learning before being admitted into the Honors Degree.

The role of universities in human capital development, research and technological innovation cannot be under evaluated. All over the world investment in University education is a critical component of national development effort. Nations today depend increasingly on knowledge, ideas and skills which are produced through researches in the universities. Nations invest in university education because society expects it to contribute to national development in three principal ways. First, society expects its university to produce the highly skilled personnel in technology, engineering, management and other professions; secondly, universities have the responsibility of producing their own corps of academic personnel that is, the intellectual resource pool that will, through scientific research generate new knowledge and innovation to solve developmental problems. Thirdly, universities produce teachers, administrators and managers for other levels of human resources development institutions.

The main union whose incessant industrial action takes a heavy toll on the academic performance of the students is the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). The union was formed in 1978, a successor to the Nigerian Association of University Teachers formed in 1965 and covering academic staff in the University of Ibadan, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, University of Ife and University of Lagos. In the 80’s, the union was active in its struggles against the military regime. In 1988 the union organized a National an industrial action to obtain fair wages and university autonomy. As a result, the ASUU was proscribed on August 7, 1988 and all its property seized. It was allowed to resume in 1990, but after another industrial action, it was again banned on August 23, 1992. However, an agreement was reached on September 3, 1992 that met several of the union’s demands including the right of workers to collective bargaining. The ASUU organized further industrial actions in 1994 and 1996, protesting against the dismissal of staff by the Sani Abacha military regime. After the return to democracy in 1999 with the Nigerian Fourth Republic, the union continued to be militant in demanding the rights of university workers against opposition by the government of President Olusegun Obasanjo. In July 2002, the national president of ASUU, petitioned Justice Mustapha Akanbi of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission to investigate the authorities of the University of Ilorin for financial mismanagement and corruption.

In 2007, ASUU embarked on an industrial action for three months. In May 2008, it held two week ‘warning strikes’ to press a range of demands, including an improved salary scheme and reinstatement of forty-nine lecturers who were dismissed from University of Ilorin in 1998. In June 2009 ASUU ordered its members in federal and state universities nationwide to proceed on an indefinite strike over disagreements with the Federal Government’s on an agreement it reached with the union about two and a half years ago. After three months of industrial action, in October 2009, ASUU and other staff unions signed a memorandum of understanding with the government and called off the industrial action.

Prior to the last industrial action embarked on by ASUU, the National Executive Council (NEC), of the Union met from Tuesday 29th November to Thursday 1st December 2011 at the University of Port- Harcourt to review, among other things: the level of implementation of the 2009  ASUU/Government Agreement; the extent of  compliance with the 2011 ASUU/FGN Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the implementation of the Agreement; Government’s unilateral dissolution of Universities’ Governing Councils; the on-going institutional accreditation and the state of the Nation, including the issue of alleged removal of fuel subsidy, but the lack of understanding between the two parties led to an indefinite strike embarked upon by the Union for fifty-nine days. It was later called off on the 1st of February, 2012. ASUU again went on a warning strike on 30th August, 2012. All these have left an unfavorable mark on the academic activities of the University students and it has also affected the academic calendar and the performance of the students. On 1st of July, 2013, ASUU embarked upon another Six months industrial action which was called off on the 17th of December, 2013 which really affected the Nigerian undergraduates leading to the involvement of students in many unwholesome activities. Often times, these incessant agitations by ASUU usually triggers industrial action by sister associations such as NASU, SSANU etc.

Industrial action or strike is workers’ refusal to work as protest for inadequate service or poor condition. In the education sector, industrial actions by academic and non academic staffs can lead to students’ examination malpractice, corruption and other social vices in the society. Strike is a social ill not different from corruption because it eats into students’ time which makes it difficult for students to be fully and properly ‘baked’ within the designated educational time frame. As a result, ‘products’ that are ill-equipped in both character and learning are turned out to the society. This research is targeted at examining the effect of these industrial actions on the academic performance of the students of the Ekiti State University.

1.2  STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The demand of ASUU and other industrial unions in the Nigerian Universities is that government should fulfill an agreement it reached with them in 2009 on how to save the nation’s universities from collapse. On the other hand, government is proposing a piecemeal selective approach. There is no doubt that education is too vital to the survival of any nation that it should be treated as a subject beyond politics or evasive polemics. It is not deniable that Nigeria is presently not doing enough, by world standards, in the funding of her children’s education. As far as the government is concerned, there are other competing items for the limited funds available and government is not doing enough in the infrastructural development of the Nigerian Universities.

This has caused serious altercations between government and these industrial unions including ASSU resulting into persistent industrial actions. The incessant industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and all these industrial unions has inadvertently affected the academics of university students; it usually poses a lot of challenges to their study duration, performance in examinations and their final grading. The students are kept away from school for a long time; most of them are completely cut off from academics as conditions at home may not favor productive and rigorous academic exercise. The students and their parents become frustrated because of long expectation of school resumption that is far from sight. Some of the students while at home doing nothing get engaged in other things other than academics.

In some cases they are easy recruits for criminal activities, such as armed robbery, kidnapping, and rape and on the other hand encourage cultism. This has made them a problem to the society peace and order in Nigeria. However the extent to which staffs of the universities including ASUU strikes affects student’s academic performance require a close examination and this research is geared towards examining the extent to which it has affected the performance of students particularly in Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State.

1.3  OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The general objective of the study is to examine influence of industrial actions on the academic performance of students in Ekiti State University EKSU.  Specific objectives are:

To examine the perception of an average university student on industrial action by Labour unions in the university including Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

To determine whether industrial action by the staffs of the universities has influence on the reading habits of students during the disruption in academic activities period.

To assess the extent to which disruption in academic program in Universities influence students’ learning effectiveness.

To determine whether Industrial Actions by Lecturers significantly contribute to low CGPA of students.

To examine whether industrial actions have direct influence on students’ overall academic performance.

To determine whether industrial actions motivate students to learn.

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS

In order to guide the study and achieve the research objectives of the study, the following research questions were formulated in line with the objectives:

What is the perception of an average university student on industrial action by Labour unions in the university including Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)?

To what extent does industrial action by the staffs of the universities influence students’ reading habits?

To what extent would disruption in academic program in Nigerian universities due to ASUU strike influence students’ learning effectiveness?

Do Industrial actions significantly contribute to Low CGPA of students?

Do Industrial actions have direct influence on students’ overall academic performance?

Do industrial actions motivate students to learn?

1.6  SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This research will add to the body of knowledge by enlightening the students on how they can cope with the unfavorable industrial actions embarked upon by University’s staffs, so as to enable them perform as expected in their studies. Furthermore, this study would also help to further research and add to knowledge build-up in the university. Again from this study, students would be able to device exemplary means of ensuring excellent performance even with the occurrence of a strike action by the various labour unions in the university including the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). Policy makers may also find the outcome of the study useful for future planning in tackling the menace by reducing the incessant industrial actions to the barest minimum.

1.7  SCOPE OF STUDY/LIMITATION OF STUDY

This study on the influence of industrial action on the academic performance of the student of the Ekiti State University will cover all the issues of industrial action in Nigerian universities focusing on the Ekiti State University and the perception of students about it.

Limitation of the Study

The researcher in the course of this work encountered certain constraints which are:

Time constraint as the research work is combining with other academic activities.

Second is the dearth of information such as low respond from respondent due to one reason or the other.

Lastly in financial constraint occasioned by the need for continuous sorting for information material.
