EVALUATION OF ROLE OF SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC INFRASTRUCTURE IN PROMOTION OF BUSINESS ACTIVITIES IN NIGERIA (CASE STUDY OF SOME SELECTED SMES IN FCT ABUJA)
Abstract
The role of social and economic infrastructure in promoting business activities is crucial for the growth and sustainability of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). This study evaluates the impact of social and economic infrastructure on the performance of SMEs in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, Nigeria. The research explores how factors such as transportation, electricity, water supply, telecommunications, and financial services influence the productivity, competitiveness, and overall success of SMEs. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining both quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques. Surveys were administered to SME owners and managers in Abuja, and in-depth interviews were conducted with key stakeholders from government agencies and business development organizations. The findings reveal that inadequate infrastructure, especially in transportation and power supply, significantly hampers the growth potential of SMEs. However, improvements in these areas, alongside enhanced access to financial services and modern communication technologies, were found to positively impact business efficiency and market reach. The study concludes that robust infrastructure is essential for promoting a favorable business environment and recommends policy interventions focused on improving critical infrastructure for SMEs in Nigeria. This research provides insights into the barriers and opportunities that SMEs face, offering a roadmap for stakeholders to better support business activities in the region.
