EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTS OF ACID PRE-TREATMENTS ON GERMIABILITY OF DIOSPYRUS MISLIFORMIS SEEDS

Abstract

This study evaluates the effects of acid pre-treatment on the germinability of Diospyros misliformis seeds. Seed dormancy and low germination rates are significant constraints to the propagation and utilisation of this indigenous species. The experiment was designed to test various durations of concentrated acid exposure (e.g., hydrochloric acid or sulphuric acid) prior to sowing, alongside an untreated control, using a completely randomized design. Key germination parameters—germination percentage, germination rate, mean time to emergence—were recorded over a defined incubation period. Results revealed that acid pre-treatment significantly improved germination performance compared to the control, reducing dormancy break-time and increasing the proportion of seed emergence. The optimum exposure duration was found to be [insert best duration] minutes, achieving a germination percentage of [insert value]%. These findings suggest that acid scarification is a practical method for enhancing the propagation of Diospyros misliformis, and recommend its adoption in nursery production and restoration programmes.
