TRANSPARENCY INTERNATIONAL AND THE CHALLENGES OF CORRUPT PRACTICES IN NIGERIA, 2015-2025
Abstract
Corruption remains one of the most persistent challenges undermining Nigeria’s political stability, economic growth, and social development. Despite numerous anti-corruption reforms and institutions, the prevalence of bribery, embezzlement, and abuse of public office continues to threaten governance and public trust. This study examines the role of Transparency International (TI) in combating corrupt practices in Nigeria between 2015 and 2025, focusing on the organization’s influence on policy reforms, public awareness, and global accountability indices. Using a qualitative-descriptive research approach and data drawn from Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) reports, government publications, and secondary sources, the study analyzes trends in Nigeria’s corruption rating, policy responses, and institutional challenges during the decade under review (Transparency International, 2024).
Findings reveal that while Transparency International has significantly contributed to global awareness of corruption and has influenced Nigeria’s anti-corruption discourse, the country’s performance remains poor, with CPI scores ranging between 24 and 27 points out of 100, placing it among the most corrupt nations globally (TI, 2023). Factors such as weak enforcement of anti-corruption laws, political interference, lack of transparency in public procurement, and limited judicial independence continue to impede progress. The study also highlights that despite the efforts of agencies like the EFCC and ICPC, corruption remains deeply institutionalized within Nigeria’s political and bureaucratic structures.
The research concludes that the effectiveness of Transparency International’s advocacy in Nigeria depends largely on domestic political will, institutional reforms, and civic engagement. It recommends strengthening anti-corruption frameworks, improving access to information, protecting whistleblowers, and fostering international cooperation to promote transparency and accountability.
