PROSPECTS AND CHALLENGES OF REGIONAL INTEGRATION IN WEST AFRICA
Abstract
Regional integration has long been recognized as a critical pathway toward economic growth, political stability, and social development in West Africa. This study examines the prospects and challenges of regional integration within the framework of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and other subregional initiatives between member states. The research explores the extent to which integration efforts have facilitated trade liberalization, political cooperation, infrastructural development, and collective security across the subregion. It also highlights the persistent challenges—such as weak institutional capacity, political instability, inadequate infrastructure, overlapping memberships, and non-tariff barriers—that have hindered the realization of a fully integrated West African market.
Employing both qualitative and quantitative research methods, the study draws upon secondary data from ECOWAS reports, World Bank publications, and academic literature to assess the successes and limitations of regional integration efforts. The findings reveal that while progress has been made in areas such as peacekeeping operations, regional transportation, and monetary cooperation, significant barriers remain in achieving economic convergence and policy harmonization.
The study concludes that regional integration in West Africa holds immense potential for enhancing trade competitiveness, promoting regional peace, and fostering sustainable development—provided that member states strengthen political commitment, improve governance, and invest in regional infrastructure. Recommendations include enhancing the role of ECOWAS institutions, deepening intra-regional trade, and addressing security challenges that undermine integration objectives.
