ROLE OF PUBLIC AWARENESS CAMPAIGNS IN REDUCING DEMAND FOR WILDLIFE PRODUCTS
Abstract
The adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) is essential for enhancing the transparency, comparability, and reliability of financial statements in the global financial landscape. This study investigates the extent of compliance with IFRS by Wema Bank Plc, a prominent financial institution in Nigeria. The research evaluates the bank’s adherence to IFRS requirements in its financial reporting practices, focusing on areas such as the presentation of financial statements, recognition and measurement of assets and liabilities, and the disclosure of financial and non-financial information. Additionally, the study explores the challenges faced by Wema Bank in achieving full compliance, including the complexity of IFRS standards, the cost of implementation, and the need for continuous staff training.
Using a mixed-methods approach, the study analyzes Wema Bank’s financial statements from 2018 to 2023 and conducts interviews with key stakeholders, including accountants, auditors, and financial managers. The findings indicate a high level of compliance with IFRS in critical areas such as revenue recognition, financial instrument disclosure, and fair value measurement. However, the study identifies gaps in the disclosure of non-financial information and the adoption of newer IFRS standards, suggesting areas for improvement.
This research underscores the importance of IFRS compliance in fostering investor confidence, improving financial transparency, and facilitating cross-border investments. It provides actionable recommendations for Wema Bank and other financial institutions to enhance their IFRS implementation processes, such as investing in advanced financial reporting technologies, providing regular training for staff, and establishing robust internal monitoring systems. By achieving full compliance with IFRS, Wema Bank can strengthen its financial reporting framework, attract global investors, and maintain its competitive position in the international banking sector.

Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
The illegal wildlife trade is a global crisis that threatens biodiversity, ecosystems, and the survival of numerous species. Driven by demand for wildlife products such as ivory, rhino horn, pangolin scales, and exotic pets, this trade has led to the decline of many endangered species and disrupted ecological balance (WWF, 2020). Public awareness campaigns have emerged as a critical strategy to address this issue by targeting the root cause: consumer demand. These campaigns aim to educate the public about the devastating consequences of wildlife trafficking and promote sustainable alternatives (TRAFFIC, 2019).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite international efforts to combat wildlife trafficking, the demand for wildlife products remains high, particularly in regions where cultural practices and traditional medicine perpetuate their use (UNODC, 2020). Law enforcement and anti-trafficking measures alone are insufficient to address this issue, as they do not tackle the underlying demand. Public awareness campaigns have the potential to reduce demand by changing consumer behavior, but their effectiveness varies depending on design, implementation, and cultural context (VerĂssimo et al., 2017). This study seeks to explore the role of public awareness campaigns in reducing the demand for wildlife products and identify strategies to enhance their impact.
1.3 Aim of the Study
The aim of this study is to examine the role of public awareness campaigns in reducing the demand for wildlife products and to evaluate their effectiveness in changing consumer behavior and promoting conservation.
1.4 Objectives of the Study
The specific objectives of this study are:
To assess the effectiveness of public awareness campaigns in reducing the demand for wildlife products.
To identify the key factors that influence the success of public awareness campaigns.
To explore the challenges faced in designing and implementing these campaigns.
To provide recommendations for improving the effectiveness of public awareness campaigns in reducing demand for wildlife products.
1.5 Research Questions
How effective are public awareness campaigns in reducing the demand for wildlife products?
What factors contribute to the success of public awareness campaigns?
What challenges do organizations face in implementing these campaigns?
How can public awareness campaigns be improved to achieve greater impact?
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on wildlife conservation by highlighting the role of public awareness campaigns in reducing demand for wildlife products. The findings will provide valuable insights for conservation organizations, policymakers, and campaign designers seeking to develop effective strategies to combat wildlife trafficking. Additionally, the study will raise awareness about the importance of addressing demand as a critical component of wildlife conservation efforts.
1.7 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on public awareness campaigns aimed at reducing the demand for wildlife products in key regions such as Asia, Africa, and North America. It examines campaigns targeting specific wildlife products, including ivory, rhino horn, and pangolin scales, as well as broader initiatives promoting biodiversity conservation. The study is limited to campaigns implemented between 2010 and 2023.
1.8 Limitations of the Study
The study relies on secondary data and case studies, which may limit the generalizability of the findings.
The effectiveness of campaigns may vary across cultural and regional contexts, making it challenging to draw universal conclusions.
Limited access to data on campaign budgets and long-term outcomes may restrict the depth of analysis.
1.9 Definition of Key Terms
