AN ASSESSMENT OF THE IMPACT OF ADULT EDUCATION-LITERACY PROGRAMME ON ADULT LEARNERS IN DEKINA LGA, KOGI STATE
Abstract
Adult education plays a critical role in enhancing the literacy levels of individuals, fostering personal development, and contributing to societal progress. This study assesses the impact of adult education literacy programs on adult learners in Dekina Local Government Area, Kogi State. The research investigates how participation in these programs influences the literacy skills, socioeconomic status, and overall empowerment of adult learners.
Using a mixed-methods approach, the study gathers data from adult learners, program facilitators, and relevant stakeholders through surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions. Key findings reveal that the literacy programs have significantly improved participants’ reading, writing, and numeracy skills. Additionally, learners reported enhanced confidence, better employability, and greater participation in community activities. However, challenges such as inadequate funding, lack of instructional materials, and low attendance rates are identified as barriers to program success.
The study concludes that adult education literacy programs have a positive impact on adult learners, contributing to their personal growth and community development. It recommends increased government funding, provision of adequate learning resources, and enhanced community engagement to improve the effectiveness of these programs. This research underscores the importance of adult education as a tool for social transformation and sustainable development in Dekina LGA.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Adult education serves as a vital tool for addressing illiteracy and fostering socio-economic development, particularly in underdeveloped and developing regions. Literacy programs for adults are designed to equip learners with the fundamental skills of reading, writing, and numeracy, enabling them to engage meaningfully in personal, economic, and community development. In Nigeria, adult education programs have been implemented to address the significant literacy gap and empower marginalized populations, including adults who missed formal education opportunities.
Dekina Local Government Area (LGA) in Kogi State is a rural region characterized by high levels of poverty and illiteracy. Adult education literacy programs in this area aim to enhance the quality of life for individuals and communities by improving literacy skills and promoting lifelong learning. Despite government and non-governmental efforts to support these initiatives, challenges such as insufficient funding, low enrollment, and a lack of trained facilitators hinder the effectiveness of these programs.
This study seeks to assess the impact of adult education literacy programs on adult learners in Dekina LGA, focusing on their outcomes, challenges, and implications for community development.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the implementation of adult literacy programs in Dekina LGA, many adults still struggle with basic literacy skills, limiting their ability to participate in socio-economic activities and decision-making processes. While these programs aim to reduce illiteracy and improve livelihoods, their effectiveness remains unclear due to limited research on their impact. Furthermore, challenges such as poor funding, inadequate teaching resources, and low learner retention rates continue to undermine their success.
This study investigates the impact of adult education literacy programs on adult learners in Dekina LGA, examining how these programs influence their literacy levels, empowerment, and social integration. It also seeks to identify barriers to the effective implementation of these programs.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to assess the impact of adult education literacy programs on adult learners in Dekina LGA. Specifically, it aims to:
Determine the extent to which adult literacy programs have improved learners’ literacy skills.
Evaluate the socio-economic benefits derived by participants of these programs.
Examine the challenges faced by adult learners and program facilitators in the implementation of literacy programs.
Provide recommendations for improving the effectiveness of adult education literacy programs in Dekina LGA.
1.4 Research Questions
To what extent have adult education literacy programs improved the literacy skills of adult learners in Dekina LGA?
What socio-economic benefits do adult learners derive from participating in these programs?
What challenges hinder the effectiveness of adult literacy programs in Dekina LGA?
What strategies can be implemented to improve the outcomes of adult education literacy programs?
1.5 Significance of the Study
