EARLY MARRIAGE AND HEALTH IMPLICATIONS AMONG FEMALE TEENAGERS IN OBUDU LGA

Abstract:

Early marriage remains a prevalent issue globally, particularly in low-resource settings, posing significant health risks, especially for female teenagers. This study investigates the health implications of early marriage among female teenagers in Obudu Local Government Area (LGA) of Cross River State, Nigeria. Employing a mixed-methods approach, quantitative data were collected through structured surveys administered to a representative sample of [number] female teenagers aged [range] who were either married or at risk of early marriage. Additionally, qualitative data were obtained through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with key stakeholders, including married teenagers, parents, community leaders, and healthcare providers.

Preliminary findings reveal a high prevalence of early marriage among female teenagers in Obudu LGA, driven by various socio-cultural and economic factors. Early marriage was associated with adverse health outcomes, including increased risk of maternal morbidity and mortality, limited access to education and healthcare services, and heightened vulnerability to gender-based violence. Moreover, early-married teenagers reported experiencing social isolation and psychological distress, further exacerbating their health vulnerabilities.

These findings underscore the urgent need for multi-sectoral interventions aimed at addressing the root causes of early marriage and mitigating its health implications among female teenagers in Obudu LGA. Strategies focusing on education empowerment, community engagement, economic empowerment, and strengthening of healthcare systems are paramount. Additionally, targeted advocacy efforts are essential to challenge harmful gender norms and promote gender equality, thereby fostering an enabling environment for the health and well-being of female teenagers in Obudu LGA and similar contexts globally.

Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background and Context

Early marriage, defined as marriage before the age of 18, remains a prevalent social phenomenon with profound health implications, particularly among female teenagers. In many parts of the world, including Obudu Local Government Area (LGA) in Nigeria, early marriage continues to be a deeply entrenched practice influenced by cultural, religious, economic, and social factors.

The consequences of early marriage for adolescent girls are multifaceted, impacting their physical, psychological, and social well-being. From a health perspective, early marriage can exacerbate existing vulnerabilities and increase the risk of adverse health outcomes, including complications during pregnancy and childbirth, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), maternal mortality, and limited access to healthcare services. Moreover, early marriage often curtails educational opportunities and perpetuates cycles of poverty and gender inequality.

Despite efforts to address the issue, early marriage persists in many communities, highlighting the need for comprehensive research and targeted interventions to mitigate its health implications and promote the rights and well-being of adolescent girls.

Early marriage remains a pervasive issue with profound health implications, particularly for female teenagers, in many parts of the world. In Obudu Local Government Area (LGA), situated in Cross River State, Nigeria, the practice of early marriage persists, presenting significant challenges to the health and well-being of adolescent girls. Defined as marriage before the age of 18, early marriage deprives young girls of their childhood, education, and opportunities for personal development, while also exposing them to a myriad of health risks and social consequences.

Obudu LGA, nestled in the serene hills of southeastern Nigeria, grapples with socio-cultural norms and economic pressures that perpetuate the practice of early marriage. Despite legal provisions prohibiting early marriage and efforts to promote education and gender equality, the prevalence of this harmful practice remains stubbornly high. Understanding the health implications of early marriage among female teenagers in Obudu LGA is paramount for designing effective interventions to safeguard their health and rights.

This study seeks to explore the multifaceted health implications of early marriage among female teenagers in Obudu LGA. By examining the prevalence of early marriage, its determinants, and the associated health risks, this research aims to shed light on the complex interplay between socio-cultural factors, health outcomes, and gender dynamics in the context of early marriage. Through a combination of quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews with key stakeholders, including married teenagers, parents, community leaders, and healthcare providers, this study endeavors to provide a comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced by young girls forced into early marriage.

The findings of this study are expected to inform evidence-based interventions and policy recommendations aimed at addressing the root causes of early marriage and mitigating its adverse health implications among female teenagers in Obudu LGA. By amplifying the voices of affected individuals and advocating for gender equality and social justice, we can strive to create a future where every girl in Obudu LGA and beyond has the opportunity to thrive, free from the shackles of early marriage and its detrimental health consequences.

1.2 Research Objectives

The primary objective of this study is to explore the health implications of early marriage among female teenagers in Obudu LGA. Specific research objectives include:

To examine the prevalence and socio-demographic determinants of early marriage among female teenagers in Obudu LGA.

To assess the reproductive health outcomes and healthcare utilization patterns among married adolescent girls.

To investigate the psychosocial consequences of early marriage on the mental health and well-being of married adolescent girls.

To explore the perceptions, attitudes, and experiences of key stakeholders, including parents, community members, and healthcare providers, regarding early marriage and its health implications.

To provide recommendations for policy and programming to address the health needs and rights of married adolescent girls in Obudu LGA.

1.3 Significance of the Study

This study holds significant implications for public health, gender equality, and human rights in Obudu LGA and beyond. By shedding light on the health implications of early marriage among female teenagers, the research aims to raise awareness, stimulate dialogue, and inform evidence-based interventions to support the reproductive health and rights of adolescent girls.

Furthermore, the findings of this study may contribute to policy development and advocacy efforts aimed at addressing the root causes of early marriage, promoting gender-equitable norms, and improving access to education, healthcare, and social support services for married adolescent girls.

1.4 Scope and Limitations

This study focuses specifically on the health implications of early marriage among female teenagers in Obudu LGA, Nigeria. It employs a qualitative research approach to explore the lived experiences and perspectives of married adolescent girls, parents, community members, and healthcare providers. However, it is important to acknowledge that the study’s findings may not be generalizable to other contexts, and certain limitations, such as sample representativeness and researcher bias, may influence the interpretation of results.

1.5 Organization of the Thesis

This thesis is organized into five chapters. Chapter One provides an introduction to the research topic, background information, research objectives, significance of the study, scope, and limitations. Chapter Two reviews relevant literature on early marriage, its determinants, health implications, and interventions. Chapter Three describes the research methodology, including study design, participants, data collection procedures, and data analysis techniques. Chapter Four presents the findings of the study, followed by a discussion of the results in Chapter Five. Finally, Chapter Six offers conclusions, implications, and recommendations for future research and practice
